Max Abelman, MA, LLP

Max Abelman earned his Masters Degree from the Michigan School of Professional Psychology in 2007.  Max provides mental health and substance abuse services to adults and to adolescents who are 13 years of age or older.  He specializes in treating many issues, including domestic violence and self-injury.

Betty Andersen, MA, LLP

Betty Andersen earned her Clinical Psychology Masters Degree from Oakland University in 1979.  She brings more than 30 years of experience in providing therapeutic services to clients who are experiencing stress and a variety of life challenges.  Betty specializes in treating many conditions, including anxiety, depression, and post-traumatic stress.  She treats adolescents and adults.

Kym Carlson, MA, LPC

Kym Carlson decided to pursue becoming a therapist to help improve the lives of families, children, and adolescents when she was a teenager herself.  After working with children and families in Gratiot County’s Community Mental Health’s Respite Program while studying at Alma College, Kym went on to attend Oakland University and obtained her Master of Arts Degree in Counseling in 2008.

Kym’s clients experience an energetic,  client-centered and supportive environment to comfortably develop a therapeutic relationship based on unconditional positive regard.  Kym utilizes a variety of therapeutic techniques based on where each client is in his/her own personal journey, often using Cognitive Behavioral Therapy, Behavior Modification, Supportive Therapy, and Solution Focused/Strength Based Therapy.

Karen Crider, PsyS, LLP

Karen Crider completed her Masters Degree in Clinical Psychology at the Michigan School of Professional Psychology in 2008.   She is a doctoral candidate, having finished her doctorate course work, and is currently completing her doctoral dissertation which is focused on trauma and first responders.

Karen works with clients on self esteem, empowerment, grief, and the deepening of emotional intimacy with the self and with others.  She facilitates healing and growth by providing a safe and supportive atmosphere.  Karen’s special interests include providing compassionate care for survivors of trauma and for those who are looking to remove blocks to  success.

Carol Devnani, MA, LPC, LMSW

Edward Kainz, MA, LPC

Nancy Nester, MA, LPC, NCC

Nancy Nester has been with Pioneer Counseling Centers since 2010.  She provides mental health and substance abuse therapy for adolescents and adults and utilizes individual and group therapy.   Nancy’s specialized focus is to facilitate personal growth and healing for those recovering from trauma.  Additional specialties include:  depression, anxiety, women’s issues,  adjustment disorders, family problems, and adolescent-parenting concerns.

Nancy is a Licensed Professional Counselor who earned her Masters Degree in Counseling from Eastern Michigan University. Her holistic approach incorporates elements of Mindfulness, Dialectical Behavioral Therapy, Cognitive Behavioral Therapy, and Gestalt Techniques, with the goal of working towards a balance of mind, body, and spirit.

Nancy has worked in human services for more than 20 years and in a variety of settings.  She worked in education for 15 years as a Special Education teacher for emotionally impaired adolescents and as a Content Mastery Coordinator.  Nancy has ran a foster home and has worked with traumatic brain injury as the  Program Coordinator of a CARF accredited  substance abuse unit. Borhan (Ray) Rais, MSW, LMSW

Ray Rais earned his Master of Social Work Degree from Wayne State University.  Ray is a Certified Advanced Alcohol and Drug Counselor.  He has more than 30 years of experience in providing effective mental health, substance abuse, marital, and family counseling to adolescents and  adults.

Ray has successfully treated individuals presenting with problems of anxiety and depression, marital, family, and interpersonal relationships.  He has extensive background in the treatment of clients with alcohol and drug use in both inpatient and outpatient settings.  Ray is competent to work with the dually disordered clients (mental health and substance abuse issues).

Kurt Richards, LMSW, CAAC

Kurt Richards earned his Master of Social Work Degree  from Wayne State University in 2001 and obtained additional training in substance abuse therapy.  He  provides mental health and substance abuse  services to children, adolescents and  adults. In addition to providing substance abuse treatment,  Kurt also specializes in other areas, including anxiety, depression, trauma, and family therapy.

Dr. Paul Smith, PhD, Licensed Clinical Psychologist

Dr. Smith is a Clinical Psychologist with expertise in serving children, adolescents, adults and older adults.  He provides diagnostic evaluations, specialized testing and psychotherapy to treat a range of problems and concerns, including:

Kara Woodliff, MA, LLP

Kara received her  Masters Degree in Clinical Psychology from University of Detroit Mercy with a concentration in Addiction Studies.  She specializes in assessment/testing cases for children, adolescents, and adults.  She utilizes various procedures which are available to aid in the diagnoses and treatment planning for ADHD, substance abuse, academic, personality, and cognitive impairments.
